What's New in this Release

  • Automatically secure browser downloaded data based on the URL source. Configure URL rules in the SecureCircle admin UI and use in combination with SecureCircle browser plugins for Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
  • Admin UI supports searchable help documentation directly within the UI.
  • Additional support for HTTP and Datadog SIEM integration
  • The SecureCircle Admin UI has been reorganized to focus on Securing data, Accessing data, and configuration.

New Features and Improvements

  • Secure Data by URL as it is downloaded through browsers running the SecureCircle plugins for Chrome, Edge, or Firefox using URL pattern rules configured in the SecureCircle Admin UI.
  • Help documentation is available in the Admin UI
  • Supports SIEM integration with DataDog.
  • Support generic HTTP SIEM integration.
  • Secure Data based on contextual regex patterns is moved from the client configuration page to a Secure Data By Regex page.
  • Application List supports ability to filter by Accessed State. If the application has attempted to access secured data, the accessed state will be 'Accessed'. If the application have not attempted to access secured data, the accessed state will be 'Never Accessed. By default the filter is set to 'Accessed'.
  • Users will no longer have to confirm device installation via email. Users will receive an email that a device has been registered to their account If the user hasn't installed SecureCircle agent, they should contact their admin to have the new device removed.
  • Inviting and Reinviting users to Circles via email supports a 'Do not send invitation email to User' option.
  • SecureCircle admin UI account passwords support "!" (Exclamation points).
  • Devices are now managed on a single page, filterable by type.
  • Advanced server properties, such as CA certificate trust, can now be configured in the Configuration > Advanced > Advanced Properties page.
  • Secure Data by Processes that are "disabled" from accessing secure data is now possible (use caution when configuring).
  • The SecureCircle Admin UI has been reorganized to better designate how data is secured and how it is accessed.

Common Client New Features and Improvements

  • Installation no longer is blocked by conflicts with fhoutlook.dll (if Outlook is opened)
  • The SecureCircle plugins for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox now only require standard extension configuration (e.g., through MDM, GPO) to enable full functionality.
  • Improved client-to-server communication resiliency.
  • Improved functionality for detecting poor network conditions and falling back to offline cache to improve performance and usability.
  • Circle membership based on AD group(s) configuration is now more resilient to scenarios where AD group membership may briefly not be ascertained by the host OS.
  • fhtools will now not abort a recursive operation if it encounters a single file to which it does not have access.

Changes and Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where users designated with "Read Only" access were still able to write to the same secured file.
  • Fixed an issue where Excel files placed in secure folders over SMB could report an error and become inaccessible.
  • Fixed an issue where .tmp files were being left over after saving Office files on some systems with antivirus/DLP solutions that lock and scan Office files.
  • Fixed an issue where Excel files located on an SMB server would sometimes report "Document not saved" after attempting to save.
  • Fixed issues where Office files may report "Access Denied" when attempting to be saved.

Version 2.14.1 for Windows

The following new features, improvements, and bug fixes apply to the Windows client release.

  • Windows endpoint supports file system monitoring for file creation, modification, and deletion. Events are logged for mounted volumes like USB as well. The Mac endpoint has support for file system monitoring in previous releases. Logging parameters are configured in the endpoint INI file.
  • Improved event logging to include more granular information such as reporting trigger for encryption (by Secure Folder, by Regex, by URL).
  • Improved performance when opening a File Explorer window to a folder containing many secured files.
  • Improved error and timeout handling in unstable network conditions.
  • Added more details regarding SecureBy events in reports to SIEMs.
  • Temporary files that may be created during manual encryption are now hidden by default (show hidden files in File Explorer to reveal).
  • Resolved an issue where enabling Outlook.exe to read decrypted data from secured files, then writing .msg files to a local secured folder could lead to corruption in the .msg files.

Version 2.14.2 for Server and Windows

The following new features, improvements, and bug fixes apply to the Server release.

  • Optimized Directory Integration group import process.
  • Fixed an issue where AD-based users were allowed to log-in to the SecureCircle Admin UI when not a member of the specified admin group.
  • Updated to BouncyCastle v1.68.
  • Support for KMIP 1.1 providers.
Change to Active Directory Admin Login

The Directory Login feature for administrators has been updated in 2.14.2 and requires a migration for all deployments upgrading to 2.14.2+. Migration instructions available here

The following new features, improvements, and bug fixes apply to the Windows client release.

  • Resolved an issue where a deadlock could occur that could result in IO hangs when running with certain versions of Sysinternals Sysmon.
  • Resolved an issue where creation of a new file from a SMB client on an SMB server where the SMB server is configured with a Secure Folder could result in an error indicating that there is not enough space on the disk.
  • Resolved an issue where users may not see shell context menu items, properties tabs, or overlay icons when the server is configured with “Trust by default to…New Applications”.

SecureCircle 2.14.4 Agent for Windows, macOS and Linux

The following new features, improvements, and bug fixes apply to the Mac client release.

New Features and Improvements

  • macOS Big Sur support.
  • Added health troubleshooter to SecureCircle menu bar icon.
  • SecureCircle browser plugin support for Chromium-based browsers, including New Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.

Bugs

  • Fixed an issue where AD-joined macOS devices may intermittently not be able to access data due to being unable to determine proper AD group membership.
  • Fixed an issue where reads of large data repositories containing encrypted files may return ciphertext instead of plaintext to allowed applications.

New Features and Improvements

  • Improved handling of files in a OneDrive-synced folder. Note: "Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open" must be unchecked for consistent interaction with Office documents. See for more information.

Bugs

  • Fixed an issue where some file open events by disallowed applications were not reported to the SIEM.
  • Fixed an issue where silent upgrades run as a different user sometimes resulted in 'fhshellext.dll' being unable to be updated.
  • Fixed an issue where the Chromium extension was sometimes not correctly able to secure data on AD-based installations.
  • Fixed an issue where Windows application could crash when accessing files hosted on a Samba-based SMB share with xattr-based Alternate Data Stream (ADS) support.
  • Fixed an issue where Barracuda Backups were not able to read file data, resulting in backup failures or backed-up files that did not restore correctly.

SecureCircle 2.14.5 Agent for Windows

The following new features, improvements, and bug fixes apply to the Windows client release.

  • Fixed an issue where Barracuda backups failed to backup secured files that were actively in use by remote SMB clients.

Bugs

  • Fixed an issue where, in rare cases with certain SecureCircle driver parameters overridden in the registry, opening certain secured Excel files could result in a crash/BSOD.
  • Fixed an issue where data aggressively saved to SMB locations may become temporarily unsecured.
